My Journey of Resilience: Living with VWD
I am Maryam Un Nisa, a 33-year-old woman from a rural village. Since I was only six months old, I have lived with Type 3 von Willebrand Disease (VWD). My family has felt the weight of this condition deeply; I lost my elder sister to it, and my younger sister lives with the same diagnosis. Growing up, my primary struggle was severe gum bleeding, but my parents always encouraged me to be independent and resilient rather than overprotected.
Overcoming Major Hurdles
I have faced many hurdles, especially severe menstrual bleeding. There were so many moments I couldn’t celebrate—whether it was a wedding, Eid, or even my exams—because of my health. While I often felt frustrated, I overcame these challenges through my incredible support system: my family, my husband, my school management, and my friends. I love you all for standing by me.
Building My Future
I refused to let my health dictate my ambitions:
Education: I earned my Bachelor’s degree followed by a Master’s in Special Education.
Skills: I completed a diploma in tailoring and cloth stitching.
Career: I began teaching in my village and eventually rose to the position of School Principal. This role gave me the confidence I needed to take charge of my life.
My Life Today
I was married in 2023 and am living a very happy life with my understanding husband, Alhamdulillah. Although I still face frequent health issues, I face them head-on with the support of my family. Today, I continue to serve as a principal, leading my school with pride.
My Message to You
I believe that difficulties exist to help us discover our hidden potential. My faith and the support of the Hemophilia Society have taught me to rise above my disorder. My advice is simple: live life one day at a time and make the most of every moment.
”Keep your fears to yourself, but share your courage with others
